The Designated Driver System

Throughout this course you have heard a lot about never drinking and then driving again. We have talked about being responsible for our actions and as part of that responsibility we have talked about the need to PLAN AHEAD if we are going to be drinking.

The DESIGNATED DRIVER SYSTEM is a part of that planning ahead. It means that you will choose someone from your group who will NOT DRINK at all during the event and who will be responsible for getting everyone home safely after the event. For some groups this will be a different person each time who will, for this event, not drink and will do the driving for everyone. For other groups it will mean the same person, who does not drink anyway, will do the driving.

To assist you in facilitation of the DESIGNATED DRIVER SYSTEM with your family and friends, CAIP is distributing "No thanks....I'm driving" stickers. The purpose of the stickers is to have the person chosen as the designated driver wear the sticker so that bartenders and well meaning friends will know that this person is driving and will not be drinking. It will serve as a public statement of responsibility and will reinforce the fact that this person is the driver for this event.

  • Most establishments will honor the designated driver system and will furnish free soft drinks to your designated driver, if they know you are using this system.
